Kartheeka Gnanamrutham - 2011 - I

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan arranged a discourse on bringing out the importance of the month "Kartheeka" in the Hindu calendar as a part of its annual programme "Kartheeka Gnanamrutham".

Sri Vaddhiparthi Padmakar who has been honoured with Astavadhanam, Janta Avadhanam, Tribhasha Maha Sahasravadhanam and Hindi Avadhanam was the guest speaker.

In his inspiring speech to the students and the staff, the eminent speaker brought forth the importance of instilling spirituality in children at an early age. He spoke eloquently about the month "Kartheeka", seasoning his speech with fun and humour. "Kartheeka Masam" is for fasting, meditation, seeking one's inner self and enlightening oneself by serving parents and the guru. This is the only month when people pray both Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. He compared the traditioins followed in Bhavan with the ancient Gurukula system where teachers imparted knowledge for holistic development of the students.

He focussed on the importance of "Upavasa" (Fasting) to improve our concentration and control over our senses. He quoted the example of Bhima, a voracious eater, who also observed "Upavasa" during this month. Through the anecdote of "Yagnavalkiya" he brought out the signifance of reciting Saraswathi Kavacham on Suklapaksha Ekadasi in the month of Kartheeka.
